After spending four years at art college, the bulk of my working life was at The National Magazine Company in London. There, on Country Living magazine, I did every job in the art department - from Picture Researcher all the way up to Art Director - and there I learnt many key design skills: how to transform words and pictures into something clear and informative for the reader or consumer to understand, how to select good pictures, and how to work FAST. I also wrote some features and articles - something I enjoy very much - which honed my editing skills.
Since then I've kept busy withfreelance designandmap illustrationand have created the matesratesdesign.com website to spread my design philosophy - good design at a fair price.
